Lyrics

So Long Kid (12/03/09)
F Am C Em
I kill my friends so they don’t kill me first
It’s so cold up here; don’t even know what time it is
You’re wonderful; you remember everything that happens
Away for fifteen years; don’t even know what time it is
So so long kid, so long kid, so long kid
I went back to the cellar of the house,
I felt sick as the rain began to fall
My room was locked; couldn’t find the key,
Slept outside the door at the end of the hall
You woke me up when you came back in,
My head was sore, my eyes were black
I saw the flash and I heard the crack,
Knew there and then there was no way back
So so long kid, so long kid, so long kid
I never wanted it to be like this,
All I wanted was a your loving kiss
You’re lying on the floor, can’t get by to the door
I hear them coming and I want to hide
No single soul will be on my side
So so long kid, so long kid, so long kid
You’re wonderful; you remember everything that happens

The Sound of the Fall Part 1 (08/05/06 & 10/11/08)
Am E G D F C E E / A C# D F/G
When I walk into the store
And it’s so quiet and the shelves are all so full
I just want to pull it down
Down to the ground
And listen to the sound of the fall
I’m so angry with myself
All the foolish things I’ve done year after year
That’s me up there on the shelf
I’m coming down as I listen to the sound of the fall
And every day goes by so fast
I never know if it’s my last
I’m left outside as the world goes rushing past
I’m down on the ground
And I’m listening to the sound of the fall
I do nothing day to day
And I know that when I go
All the stuff I’ve bought won’t save me from my fate
I’ll be lying on the ground
Listening to the sound of the fall
Now the party is in full swing but I’m listening
I’m listening to the sound of the fall
Now the sound system has failed
And it’s so quiet here I’ve got the future nailed
I need to open up my eyes
Get myself off of the ground
And stop listening to the sound of the fall
But I don’t think that I can change
Try as I might I know that I am quite deranged
My world gets faster everyday
I’m lying on the ground
And all I hear is the sound of the fall
Now the party is in full swing but I’m listening
I’m listening to the sound of the fall
So now I understand the game
But I still live my life exactly the same
I need to open up my eyes
Get myself off of the ground
And stop listening to the sound of the fall

I Believed You Said We Dreamt (6/3/09)

D C G / Em G C
You lied about everything you promised me was true
And that’s something that I never thought you’d do
I believed you said I believed we dreamt I believed
Recognised my father’s jersey underneath the long red coat
Looked upon the young man up above me
With a lump in my throat
I believed you said I believed we dreamt I believed
The shilling underneath my pillow I never questioned how
The baby carried to the rooftop I never wondered how
I believed you said I believed we dreamt I believed
It took me years to realise I could live without your love
Now I look back and see it all so very clearly from above
I believed you said I believed we dreamt I believed
You took my heart you tore it out you stamped it
Down and down and down
And I just sat there looking on and watching like a clown
I believed you said I believed we dreamt I believed
You lied about everything you promised me was true

Non Industrial Catastrophe Blue (15-17/3/09)
Em G A
I had a dream I went out back
Out through the gate to get the car
The car had gone there was an angel
Instead of white his robes were blue,
I looked at you and I asked “why?”
And you just said “It’s what you wanted”
Non Industrial Catastrophe Blue
Instead of steel his wings were wood,
And they were glazed we could see right through
See everything that he had in there
I went closer still and there was writing on the wall
I couldn’t read but then the words came into focus
It said “Non Industrial Catastrophe Blue”
Then I awoke and you were sleeping by my side the cat was
Lying in between us, she was purring
It was only six but I thought I should get up now
And get myself off to the beach and watch the sunrise
Non Industrial Catastrophe Blue
I had a song inside my head the day before it wasn’t great
But it was fine to get things started
Worked out the rhythm of the words that I required
Then told the story of the dream and how it ended
The angel spoke he told a tale of when he roamed across
The earth just touching people and they fell there
Instead of white his robes were blue
I looked at you and I asked “why?”
And you just said “It’s what you wanted”
Non Industrial Catastrophe Blue

Tomorrow or the Day After Next (31/1/09)
C Em Am Em / F Dm C C-G G / F C / F C C-G G
When will you tell me your name?
Tomorrow or the day after next
I’ll be around, you won’t hear a sound
Biding my time, committing no crime
Whenever you like
Tomorrow or the day after next
I’ll be around, you won’t hear a sound
Biding my time, committing no crime
I’ll be your friend
Right till the end
You’ll want me right here
It’s all crystal clear
You know the rules of the game
Tomorrow or the day after next
I’ll be around, you won’t hear a sound
Biding my time, committing no crime
When will you tell me your name?
Tomorrow or the day after next
I’ll be around, you won’t hear a sound
Biding my time, committing no crime
I’ll be your friend, right till the end
You’ll want me right here, it’s all crystal clear
So tell me your name, tell me your name
You’ll tell me your name, it’s always the same
You’ll tell me your name, it’s always the same

Please Stay With Us (21/1/2006 & 9/11/08)
G Em / Am C G / D (C+1) C Em G / D C G D
And so this is your home now
You can put your things anywhere you like
There’s plenty of space for you to fill
You can change it around now
Arrange these things anyway you like
The key’s on a hook on the wall by the door
This is home for us all now
There’s a room and a bed for all of us
Say you’ll work with us and you’ll eat with us
And you’ll stay with us
Please stay with us...
And here is your bedroom
Your bed is so soft and warm and clean
But it’s not exactly new, if you’re worried,
I can wash the linen again
Please stay with us...
Or here is the fireplace
You can sleep by it every single night
I won’t trouble you, I’m not ill
We’ll take care of you like no-one else will
Please stay with us...
Please stay...

We Drove (20/12/08)
Am F C Em/G
We drove out along the coast road
We saw deer on the headland
The white red roofed villas
Patches of forest and the ocean oh so blue
The tide was out and the sand
So golden on the edge of the beach
We drove through the town passing down the coast
Across the rolling country and up into the mountains
We went over and the road stretched out ahead
I glanced at my watch it was time to go back
And I knocked on the glass and I asked the driver
“Please turn around”
Back at the hotel where we stayed close to St John
We stopped the car and I got out and the man
Carried the bags to the door as I stood at reception
I’ll see you around don’t worry about the money
I’ll see you around and I waved to the car as you drove off

My House Could Be Your Home (16/11/08)
Am C G D / C Em / G B / C Em (D)
You’ve just arrived in town from somewhere far away
You don’t know anyone, you sit and watch TV all day
Don’t really know what all those funny folk are saying
You fall back on your faith and you fill your day with praying
Come on round, for my house could be your home
Won’t you come on round, come on round
I know it seems like nothing’s going right today
Why don’t you pack your bags, come on over here and stay
Put the book behind you open up your eyes
One day you’ll see how you’ve been poisoned by the lies
Come on round, for my house could be your home
Won’t you come on round, don’t rely upon the phone
Won’t you come on round, there’s no need to be alone
Won’t you come on round, come on round,
I’ll introduce you to a world of fun and laughter
We can turn this town upside down
And we can sing and we can dance
If you’ll just give this world a chance
Come on round, there’s no need to be alone
Won’t you come on round, don’t rely upon the phone
Won’t you come on round, for my house could be your home
Won’t you come on round, come on round

Blend (15/6/08 and 27/9/08)
Em D C Am G / Am C G / G Em D C G
Keep your feet on the ground
Don’t think out loud
Play dead when you fall
Don’t answer their call
Keep yourself to yourself
Do nothing at all
I walked through the silence and the colour and the heat
And in the twilight saw his fingers play the barrel of his gun
The silence is chilling
Then it starts again
The voice comes from nowhere
And then I see the radio
We curve round and down and off the bridge
The big sign with the stars over looking the falls
When he comes into the room
One thing that strikes me is the tune
They think they know, they don’t know anything at all
And when the telephone does ring
When you are walking through the rain
And then you know that there is someone after all
Play dead when you fall
Do nothing at all
Keep your feet on the ground
Blend in with the crowd
Blend

The Fire in the Clearing (20/12/08 & 11/01/09)
E
He stood up, he was alright
He looked up at the track
And the tail lights in the night
And the loco, tight round the curve
There was water on both sides of the track
Felt his knee, trousers torn to flesh and bone
He tried to strap, he tried the telephone
Down to the water, watch them come round again
He was covered in cuts and bruises
Felt the lump over his eye
Couldn’t believe what had hit him
Oh so dark, out in the night
Along the track he saw the fire
Down the embankment down on the wire
The track came out through the cut
The fire was burning, the clearing opened out
He fell away into the woods
The fire was bright
At the edge of the trees
There was a man, he was down on his knees
With his head in his hands looking at the fire
Head in his hands looking at the fire
The man looked at him, he looked at the man
And in the light of the fire
His face was misshapen
His nose was sunken
His eyes were slits
He had queer shaped lips
Oh Oh Oh Oh
The man’s face, the baby’s face
The man’s face, the baby’s face
He looked so dead in the firelight
Away from the fire
Across to the tracks
Climbed the embankment
Blood on his back
Found he had some food
Deep down in his sack
Put it in his pocket
Then he walked away
He could see the fire in the clearing

They Broke The Door Down (29 & 30/03/09)
E / Am / F C G
He lived alone above the grocery store
With his memories and his lies
And every night he’d make his way downtown
Where he’d meet up with his boys
They broke the door down, they broke the door down
And they found him lying on the floor
When he emerged from the dimly lit room
And the lights shone in his face
They took him down with such heavy handed force
That his blood was all over the place
They broke the door down, they broke the door down
And they found him lying on the floor
The sky was dark and the clouds were grey
When he took the long last walk
The children played with a hop skip and jump
On the sidewalk marked with chalk
They broke the door down, they broke the door down
And they found him lying on the floor

The Sound of the Fall Part 2 (08/05/06 & 10/11/08)
Am E G D F C E E / A C# D F/G
I take a walk across the park
The sun is out, it isn’t dark
I lie upon the grass, under the blue sky
Down on the ground and I listen to the sound of the fall
I buy some ice cream from the van
Ice cream and chocolate and a Coke from the man
I tidy up before I leave
I walk back to our home as I listen to the sound of the fall
And the garden looks so good
I like the fence you made from those old bits of wood
There’s no traffic driving down our little street
Safe for our kids and I’m listening to the sound of the fall
I have a job that pays me well
It’s not too hard and I bring happiness to all
Bring home the bacon as you look after our home
We can sunbathe out the back
While we listen to the sound of the fall
Now the party is in full swing and we’re listening
We’re listening to the sound of the fall
And our sound system is great
The reproduction makes you feel like you are there
All our friends come round and party through the night
We dance around the room
As we listen to the sound of the fall
I hope that we won’t ever change
Like that old song that goes “home on the range”
Our life gets better every day
Not a care in the world
As we listen to the sound of the fall
Now the party is in full swing and we’re listening
We’re listening to the sound of the fall
And we both love each other more and more each day
There’s no way that you or I will go away
We’ll watch our children grow
And have families of their own
Keep our feet on the ground
As we listen to the sound of the fall

My Last Trip (14/2/09)
Am D
I don’t think that anyone should know
What I feel right now
When morning came, I had used him up
Like a drunkard
I had hoped it would be my last trip
What is there that you can write right now?
Now that he is dead?
The critics dive into their vats of hate
Now that he is dead
Howard was a hero to us all but we didn’t know
